Day 79: Yiheyuan

On March 9th, I visited Yiheyuan (a summer palace) and the 798 Arts District with my tour group. The stories I heard about Empress Dowager Cixi from our tour guide were wild indeed. There was at least one story of an act of violence she perpetrated against her daughter-in-law after preventing a “coup” by the daughter-in-law and her husband, the emperor, thwarted by Yuan Shikai’s betrayal of the emperor. It would be difficult to omit the story about her invitations of officials to entertain her at Yiheyuan, too when discussing this visit.

Day 78: Another visit to the Palace Museum

On March 8th, I visited Tianan’men Square, the Palace Museum and Tiantan (the Temple of Heaven) Park, and viewed a performance titled Gold Mask Dynasty at the OCT Theatre, all with a tour group from Korea. I learned from the tour guide that the Ming and/or Qing emperors used to consult scholars staying in a building just behind the official government meeting hall during breaks while meeting with his officials.

Day 77: The Great Wall, Ming Emperor’s Tomb

On March 7th, I visited the Great Wall of China at Badaling and a Ming Dynasty imperial tomb.

Day 76: Wangfujing area, The Place

I visited the Wangfujing area and The Place on the evening of March 6th and found the sights a pleasure.

Day 75: More work

I did some more art on March 5th, painting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Andy Lau and a visitor to my studio. I visited a local print shop to get an estimate for printing post cards for my solo exhibit.
